Veterinary Ventilator Use

Ventilators are artificial lung ventilation units used in every veterinary intensive care setting to support animals with critical respiratory difficulties or during anesthesia to maintain proper air volume.

The ventilator works as an artificial lung that introduces a controlled combination of gases, humidity, and temperature in and out of the animal’s lungs, supporting life-saving veterinary care.

Ventilator Unit Identification

A veterinary ventilator typically includes two main components:

  1. Execution Unit – the most vital part of the ventilator machine, which includes:
    • A high-pressure chamber that mixes gases with filtered oxygen.
    • A gas blend regulator valve.
    • A breathing circuit that removes carbon dioxide and replaces it with oxygen.
  2. Control Unit – consisting of a keyboard and monitoring surface, displaying oxygen pressure data and system performance indicators.

Ventilator Oxygen Flow Operation

Veterinary ventilators provide airflow in two applications:

  • Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV): Delivers oxygen using a specialized veterinary mask.
  • Invasive Ventilation (IV): Used in critical care, employing an E.T. Tube or tracheal tube for direct airway access.
